Happiness Is

This post was inspired by “Happiness” from You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, a really sweet song about that talks about finding happiness in the small things.

Right before the pandemic, my church’s Children’s Choir which I directed, performed this very song, replacing most of the original text with actual things that made them happy. It ended up being a really good exercise in writing contrafacta while being a lot of fun.* We’re really proud of how it turned out!

Anyway, in the spirit of that song, I’d like to share with you (some of) the things that make me happy:

  • quiet mornings

  • hot or iced matcha, turmeric, and chai lattés

  • freshly baked bread

  • loose leaf teas

  • fountain pens

  • crafting

  • these scents: lavender, citrus, ginger

  • great tasting food

  • being anywhere with my husband

  • a good book

  • journaling and memory keeping

  • effective organization systems

  • bookstores

  • traveling and exploring

  • fashion

  • good music and art

  • deep soaking tubs

  • learning new things and skills

  • dogs and babies

  • spending time with the people I love

How about you? What makes you happy?

  • Happiness is some chicken nuggets,
Playing with bunnies, meeting a bear.
    Happiness is riding some horses,
My birthday money, sliding down stairs.
Happiness is seeing a platypus at the zoo
And happiness is one zebra or two.

Happiness is twelve kinds of ice cream,
Pizza or sushi, riding a plane.
Happiness is going on road trips,
Being outside to play in the rain.
Happiness is being alone every now and then,
And happiness is coming home again.

    Happiness is morning and evening,
    Daytime and nighttime, too.
For happiness is anyone and anything at all
    That's loved by you.

    Happiness is having two sisters,
Sharing a sandwich, singing a song.
Happiness is being together when day is through
    And happiness is…
    ...catching Pikachu!

    Happiness is morning and evening,
    Daytime and nighttime, too.
For happiness is anyone and anything at all
    That's loved by you.
